This paper looks at governance and the role of the military in Egypt since the January 2011 revolution and asks whether it is possible to restore democratic rule in Egypt. In particular, it examines the post Morsi regime’s ‘war’ against the Muslim Brotherhood and repression through the use of protest laws; explores changes in the country's constitution, which the author argues ultimately reinforces the state’s power; discusses Field Marshal El-Sisi’s candidacy for presidency; and examines the problems with the planned 2014 election process.
