This paper looks at the possibility and advantages of increased maritime cooperation in the South China Sea in the wake of missing Malaysian airplane MH370 in March 2014. It explains that the South China Sea Workshop, which held its first meeting in 1990, carried out a significant amount of work in this area and that this would be of use for future cooperation efforts. The authors also outline benefits of the workshop process, discuss the importance of the South China Sea, and look at lessons learned from the MH370 tragedy.
