This publication looks at the evolution of al-Qaeda and its role in the global jihad movement. The first chapter surveys the ideological differences within the organization’s leadership in its early years. The second presents the circumstances al-Qaeda confronted between 9/11 and Bin Laden’s death in 2011. The third chapter examines ways in which al-Qaeda, under the leadership of al-Zawahiri, and with its ideological partners can survive and continue to promote their objectives. The fourth chapter focuses on the threat al-Qaeda and its affiliates have posed over the years to Israel and the future potential of this threat. The publication concludes with recommendations for confronting al-Qaeda in the future.
