This document summarizes the results of two reports on the recording practices of countries and the UN on casualties caused by armed violence. After presenting the relevant definitions and the methodology used in the reports, the authors highlight key benefits of casualty recording, which they say include victim rights support; the development and evaluation of policies and programs; and the prevention and reduction of armed violence. They also offer recommendations for how states and the UN can advance casualty recording, including the suggestions that they should determine the purpose and uses of data; record injuries as well as deaths; and strengthen political commitment to casualty recording.
