This commentary discusses the viability of Taiwan’s plan to develop an indigenous submarine. The author argues that such a plan is unlikely to succeed and presents the reasons why. These include that, internally, Taiwan lacks both the technological experience and the resources necessary for such an endeavor. Externally, China will block any attempts by Taiwan to obtain a license for a foreign design.
