This commentary discusses the importance of complementing nuclear power development with national public awareness and education efforts in Southeast Asia. The author first explains why nuclear energy may be an attractive option for countries in the region. He then discusses some of the issues governments must incorporate into their public awareness and education strategies, such as nuclear safety and nuclear waste disposal, arguing that these strategies should not be limited to socialization efforts but should also include public engagement processes where people are given the opportunity to voice their concerns.
