This study reviews disputes in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines as well as China and Vietnam, and how these countries have attempted to manage these disputes. The author argues that China and Vietnam have established forms of dialogue to address differences and that this has resulted in the formal settlement of disputes and better management of tensions. On the other hand, he suggests that there is absence of similar mechanisms between China and Philippines, and that the two sides have failed to prevent incidents in the South China Sea from causing strains on relations.
