This brief discusses India's nuclear deterrent capability and the country's doctrine for the potential use of its nuclear weapons. Focusing on the main features and conceptual cornerstones of the doctrine, the author explains that India’s nuclear weapons are envisaged only as a deterrent and not as a means to threaten others.
