This paper addresses the question of how China can reconcile its goal of attempting to maintain regional stability with its goal of increasing control over disputed maritime territories in the East and South China Seas. The author argues that from a Chinese perspective, the tension between these two aims is something to be managed and that it does not mean that China has to choose one or the other. However, he also suggests that if China continues its aggressive efforts to expand control over disputed territories, it will further damage relations with its neighbors and risk destabilizing the regional security environment.
