This paper looks at some of the maritime disputes between ASEAN members and China and argues that these disputes have exposed the organization’s inability to present a united front in recent years. The author suggests ASEAN countries’ relative lack of power compared to China and reliance on it for trade has put them in a weak position to assert their interests. She also contends it would be challenging for the US to become involved in regional sovereignty issues due to their complexity and the resources required.
