This paper discusses the challenges posed by China and North Korea to US allies in East Asia as well as what US President Obama should do to address related concerns during his trip to the region in early 2014. The author argues that rather than reiterating the importance or reality of the US rebalance to the Asia Pacific, Obama should focus on managing its alliances in the region. He then goes on to describe what this should entail for Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
