This paper discusses the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), a naval forum which aims to encourage discussion on maritime issues and promote cooperation to ensure regional safety, stability and security. More specifically, the author addresses growing interest in the IONS from China as well as other powers such as Brazil, Chile and Peru; the lackluster performance of the symposium since its inception in 2008; and Australia's reviving the position of the IONS under its chairmanship of the forum in 2014.
