This commentary looks at the placing of a Chinese oil rig (May 2014) near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, thus aggravating relations between China and Vietnam. According to the author, however, the global characterization of the Chinese move as yet another example of its growing assertiveness may not be accurate. A closer look at the situation suggests that Beijing may well have been within its rights to place the rig where it did.
