This paper contains a collection of articles discussing the situation in South Sudan after its independence in 2011, and the country's initial pathway into statehood. Individual contributions focus on 1) the state-building challenges faced by South Sudan; 2) matters which could potentially ignite tensions with the North; 3) the implications of the South’s separation for the war-torn region of Darfur; 4) the international community’s role in improving relations between the two Sudans; 5) possible solutions and responses to inter-communal violence in Jonglei State; and 6) possible steps to achieve peace and sustainable development in South Sudan.
