This paper explores the operational advantages of autonomous weapons systems, which include lower costs, greater global reach and persistence, and the force-feeding of new concepts of employment. However, there remain genuine impediments to realizing these benefits, not the least of which are military culture and bureaucracy. That’s why the paper concludes by providing recommendations on what the US armed forces should do to use automated systems more comprehensively and effectively.
