This commentary examines China’s maritime strategy, which it argues is designed to establish a dominant Chinese presence in the South China Sea and beyond. Beijing will seemingly attempt to accomplish this end by 'ink-spotting' its forces across a wider and wider area, but also do it in such a way that it avoids any serious confrontations with the US. Finally, the commentary examines the possible impact China's maritime agenda might have on other countries in the region.
