This commentary argues that, under pressure in its preparations for the 2022 World Cup, Qatar is in the early processes of undertaking socioeconomic, and possibly political, reforms that could spark social change in the country. The author also contends that this could also improve transparency and accountability in other Gulf States and that the preparations for the World Cup have laid bare the region’s long-standing, largely ignored lack of workers’ rights and abominable living and working conditions.
