This paper reviews international reactions to the election of Narendra Modi as India’s Prime Minister in 2014. The author argues that four developments have demonstrated the re-emerging importance of India on the world stage 1) China’s talks with Prime Minister Modi after his election; 2) the firm focus on India at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore; 3) the presence of several South Asian leaders at Modi’s inauguration; and 4) US President Obama’s invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit Washington. He further contends that it is now up to India to make the best of this renewed global attention by advancing the country’s economy and diplomacy.
