This paper analyzes Pakistan’s trade relations with the US and the implications for both Pakistan and South Asia more broadly. The author argues that trade and aid-induced development goals have only held secondary status in the relationship between the two countries due to the US’ firm focus on strengthening Pakistan’s security sector. He then examines possibilities for increasing trade flows between the two countries and reflects on the obstacles impeding them. The author concludes by placing the issue in the regional context of South Asia, with a special focus on Pakistan’s relations with China.
