This paper examines how the perceived role and organization of the US military has changed to meet the threats which the country faced at particular points in time, starting in 1973 when the military became an all volunteer force. The author does this by splitting the period since 1973 into 5 sections: 1973 -1980, 1980-1991, 1991-2001, 2001-2014, and from 2014 into the future.
