This commentary discusses the implications of the 2014 Ukraine crisis for Germany’s disarmament and non-proliferation objectives. The author argues that although existing nuclear arms control agreements have thus far not been called into question, the crisis has made joint action by Russia and the United States to reduce their strategic nuclear arsenals unlikely in the medium term. He also suggests that the crisis has further diminished what were already small chances of a reduction in tactical nuclear weapons. Finally, he outlines steps Germany could take to prevent a further weakening of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
