This commentary addresses the use of historical references in territorial claims to the islands of the South China Sea. The author argues that if such references are used, they should mention the exact texts they refer to in the historical record, something which he suggests has not been done by some of the advocates for Chinese historical territorial claims. He then discusses the historical evidence he has found for historical Chinese claims to islands in the region.
