This commentary discusses Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s speech on his country's foreign policy at the Shangri-la Dialogue on May 30 2014. The author states that Abe’s speech outlined that Japan would attempt to uphold international law, strengthen its alliance with the US and enhance its relations with ASEAN. The author also argues that the speech indicates that Japan intends to be an active contributor to peace in the region.
