This commentary discusses the extent and risks of piracy in Southeast Asia and argues that media reports suggesting that the region is the worst for piracy worldwide have overstated the problem as they have not given sufficient weight to the type of attacks involved. The author also addresses what countries and maritime companies in the region should do to reduce the number of piracy attacks in Southeast Asia.
