This paper discusses how Japan has interpreted Article 9 of its constitution, which essentially renounces war as Japan's sovereign right and forbids it from threatening or using force to settle international disputes. The author also discusses how in 2014, Japanese Prime Minister Abe’s administration has attempted to adjust this interpretation in way that would lift Japan’s self-imposed ban on the exercise of collective self-defense as well as how this could affect its own security policy and its foreign relations.
