This commentary discusses some of the drawbacks of and challenges to the planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and the US. Among other things, 1) the TTIP and similar large-scale projects endanger the future of the multilateral trading order because they exclude China and other emerging economies; 2) enormous obstacles, such as inter-state dispute settlement, need to be overcome before an agreement can be reached; and 3) benefits such as increased economic growth and the creation of new jobs will be smaller than is claimed.
