This commentary discusses the response by Muslim scholars and Islamist groups to the declaration of an Islamic Caliphate by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in June 2014. The author also discusses the form Caliphates have taken in the past and suggests that the model Caliphate adopted by ISIS does not reflect these historical models and it should be rejected by Muslim scholars and the larger Muslim community.
