This paper analyzes the geopolitical implications for Europe and Asia of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. The author also examines why Russia invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea and suggests it was because President Putin regarded the threat of Kiev's potential membership of NATO as something that would undermine his country's security interests. The author also examines the implications of Russia's actions for Australia and provides policy recommendations for Canberra on how to respond.
