This commentary addresses the hostilities between Israel and Hamas which started in July 2014 and the prospects for a long term ceasefire between the two sides. The author argues that despite Israel's superior military performance in the hostilities, Hamas has made political gains during the conflict both internationally and domestically. He then contends that the potential for long term ceasefire is greater now than before as it is desired by both sides, but that there is a problem in finding a third party acceptable to both Hamas and Israel that could negotiate the terms of an agreement.
