This commentary discusses the situation and future of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. Among other issues, the author examines the internal power struggles within the coalition and the security risks it faces. He then addresses how these and other problems have prevented the coalition from countering the gains made by the Assad regime, offsetting the influence of hardline Islamist groups, and providing basic services in the areas it controls. Finally, he discusses what the international community should do to respond to these problems and to enable the coalition to govern inside Syria.
