This report discusses the deterioration of Sino-Japanese relations, focusing on the period since spring 2013. The authors suggest that the November 2014 APEC summit in Beijing is a fence-mending opportunity – if the two countries’ leaders rise above nationalism and manage multiple flashpoints. The authors also assess the risks, that if left unchecked, could lead to armed conflict between the two countries and offer recommendations on how to manage and reduce them.
