This note analyzes some of the modern threats to air security. In light of the downing of MH-17 over Ukraine, the author argues that modern surface-to-air weaponry is a real threat to air security and the safety of civilian aircraft to fly over territories in conflict can no longer be guaranteed. Considering the crucial impact of civilian aviation on global logistics and despite the difficulties of defending air corridors over regions in conflict, the author believes that the US should take a more leading role in enforcing international air security.
