This paper discusses the 2014 Afghanistan presidential election and the US-backed compromise negotiated between the two presidential candidates, Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, to form a national unity government. In particular it examines the impact of ethnic dynamics on domestic voting patterns, the rationale behind the power sharing initiative and the implications of a changed political system on the future governance of Afghanistan.
