This issue of JEMIE discusses theories of empowerment and examines how minority empowerment can be put into practice within social structures. More specifically, the articles included examine 1) the processes that lead to minority empowerment; 2) the legal framework for the protection and promotion of three linguistic groups in the Italian province of Trentino; 3) the protection and promotion of linguistic minorities in the Italian province of Trentino; 4) the protection and empowerment of national minorities on the Danish-German border; and 5) the implementation of language rights in Romania.
