This paper examines some of the questions raised by China’s increasingly assertive US policy as well as how the two countries can improve relations with each other. The author 1) maintains that the problem the US faces in Asia does not simply involve assertive Chinese nationalism, but conflicting assertive moves by a number of states in the region; 2) examines the consequences of China’s assertive policy for the country itself; and 3) looks at how Washington should respond to China’s policies.
