This paper examines Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's efforts to revise the interpretation of Japan's right of collective self-defense. In particular, the author reviews what Abe wants to achieve by changing Japan's defense policy; the reinterpretation of Japan's right to collective self-defense in July 2014; how the political opposition in Japan could respond to Abe's efforts to strengthen Japan's defense; and the potential international impact of this change.
