Focusing on the situation in Aleppo, this brief examines the broader dynamics of the civil war in Syria. In so doing, it addresses the strategies employed by the Syrian regime and the Islamic State (IS) in the conflict as well as the decision making processes and political evolution of the various rebel forces fighting both these actors. The authors also examine how support by foreign actors for the mainstream opposition in Syria has shifted as well as why the support provided so far has been unable to prevent IS and regime gains.
