This paper discusses the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in a round of by-elections in three Indian states in September 2014. The author explains that the BJP, which in August 2014 gained a full majority to form India's government, performed worse than expected. He then looks at what this means for the future of the party and its agenda both at the central and state government levels.
