This paper examines how Russia’s strategic interests in Ukraine have evolved during 2014. It does so by tracing the shifting perspectives contained in three essays written by Russian foreign policy analyst Serge Karaganov, all of which were published at key junctures in Ukraine's troubles. The shifts seemingly point to Moscow's growing appreciation of the dangers posed by the Ukrainian conflict, even if its active involvement isn't acknowledged by Karaganov.
