Sep 2014

This paper examines the possible policies and programs of reform Joko Widodo could adopt after he assumes the position of President of Indonesia in October 2014. The author first outlines the challenges that will face Joko Widodo in terms of Indonesia’s political system; governmental and administrative issues; social problems and foreign affairs. He then reviews two potential governance strategies the incoming administration could adopt: one being an outward looking policy of reform, the other being an approach that would see the administration delay reforms, something that would be more popular with certain powerful groups within the country.
