This commentary analyzes why it has been so difficult for France's President Hollande to reform the French economy. The author argues that the limited scope of the reforms is mainly due to the widespread view in France that the state should play a very important role in the economy. This narrows the options in designing economic policy that would revise the role and size of the government sector, which is – in the eyes of the author – inhibiting France's economic recovery.
