This commentary examines the extent of the links between Muslim militants and movements in the Southern Philippines and overseas Islamist groups such as the Islamic State. The author argues that despite media attention and concern over pledges of allegiance by Muslim militant groups in the Philippines to the Islamic State, such pledges are nothing more than a superficial declarations of moral support. He also suggests that there is no real organizational link between IS and the Philippines' Muslim militants and groups.
