This commentary argues that the US-led war against the Islamic State (IS) is facilitating the growth of militant Islamist groups in the Middle East. The author contends that by focusing on military rather than political solutions to the rise of such groups as IS, the US is hindering the emergence of necessary political debate within the Muslim world, leaving violence and extremism as one of the few options available to people in the region who want to bring about change.
