This issue focuses on three aspects of the ultra-violent jihadist organization, Islamic State (IS). It includes articles on 1) why violent extremist groups, such as IS, often persist in the face of defeat; 2) how competition between Al-Qaeda and IS has increased the threat of terrorism and presented new challenges to regional and global security; and 3) the meaning and symbolism of the black flag which IS and other terrorist groups fly.
