This commentary discusses the extent to which East Asia is prepared to deal with a health security threat posed by the spread of an infectious disease, such as the Ebola virus in 2014. The authors argue that while East Asia has always been susceptible to infectious diseases, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) can play a central role in putting up a strong defense, given the lessons learned after the SARS outbreak in 2002.
