This commentary discusses the implications of China’s rapid modernization and economic rise for Chinese society, politics and the Communist Party leadership (CCP). In particular, the author points to concerns over managing the economic expectations of the Chinese people and President Xi Jinping's exhortation for greater individual aspiration in his "Chinese Dream" speech, something which may haunt Beijing if it does not make good on its promises to deliver materially.
