This paper examines the Turkish government's policy under Prime Minister Recep Erdogan of encouraging members of the Turkish diaspora to maintain their relationship to Turkey and to Turkish culture, and to work in the interests of Turkey. The author first explores the roots of this new diaspora policy as well as the social, political and economic factors which drive it. He then explores the problems this could pose for how the host population views the integration of the large Turkish diaspora in Germany and the implications it has for German policy makers.
