This commentary examines the splits and debates within the jihadist communities following the declaration of the Islamic State (IS) by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in June 2014, with a particular focus on the responses of Indonesian jihadists. The author argues that such analysis is useful as studying the influence the debates within the jihadist community in Syria and Iraq have on Indonesian jihadist groups can provide vital information about such groups and inform counterterrorist policies.
