Focusing on the territorial dispute between China and Indonesia over an area of the South China Sea near the Natuna Islands, this paper discusses the increasing tensions Beijing's ability to project military power further from its shores is generating in the region. The author then explains how Indonesia has reacted to China's increased assertiveness both through diplomacy and by increasing the funding to and modernizing its armed forces.
