This paper argues that understanding the linkages between political clientelism and the increased economic growth in African countries since 2004 calls for reflection on the current state of thinking on socioeconomic transformation within the African Studies domain. In light of this, the authors contend that African political economy should be reframed by placing the idea of capitalism and capitalist transition back at the core of the analytical framework when studying socioeconomic transformation in African countries.
